Our Railing Planter Boxes - Curb Appeal

There are so many ways you can create or continue to enhance existing curb appeal. Window and railing planter boxes are one of my favorite additions to the character of a home. Best of all, window and railing planter boxes can be used throughout the seasons! Funny thing is, though, I don’t think I’ve never had a home with window or railing planter boxes! I can’t believe I haven’t, but I’ve always wanted them so it’s never too late to do what you love, right?

One of the things we loved right away about our new home was the curb appeal! It’s already such a cute coastal cottage. Since curb appeal was something we were working on at our previous home, we were thrilled that we didn’t have to start from scratch here when we moved in. But with that said, making your home your own and putting your own style and personality into it is something I love to do. And that will be no exception here, even though it is already cute the ideas are flowing for what we can do to make this home our own.

The previous owner had planter boxes hung on the porch railings and I loved the look! It was time to replace them though so I found these porch railing and window planter boxes that can be hung over the railing with the included brackets!

I love the style of these boxes, they are substantial in size and very classic looking! The brackets that were included are black, which I do think look nice but we are possibly going to paint the black part white so they blend in more with our white railings. However, the brackets are starting to be less visible as the plants grow. Depending on the construction of your railing you could hang the boxes directly on the railing. The boxes themselves are quite versatile, you can hang them under windows, on railings or even just set them on the ground or a porch.

The planter boxes are self watering (pre-drilled draining hole and self watering insert included). They are 36 inches long, 11 inches high and 11 inches wide. They also come in black or gray colors (it looks like the black version 2 pack is on sale on Amazon here). They are made for outdoors and are weather resistant and fade resistant.

TIP: If you want more than one, you can save money if you buy them here in a set of two rather than two individual boxes.

We planted ours earlier this summer and they are really starting to take off and fill in. We chose some easy to grow, hardy plants for our first attempt at a window box. We are so pleased with how pretty they look! They make us happy every day.

Here are the four plants in each of ours:

Pentunia Surfinia® Heavenly Blue
Bacopa MegaCopa® White
Green Gem Boxwood
Pineapple Variegated Mint

The plants will continue to fill in and look better and better for a couple of months probably, but when they don’t look as fresh any longer we’ll be able to switch out the annuals. The boxwoods should stay healthy and green all year round here, so we can just add in other seasonal decor or plants. Evergreen boughs, twinkle lights, faux plants, Christmas decor, the options are endless for how we could use them through the winter, too.
